Kids' Chance of Michigan Scholarship

Kids’ Chance of Michigan, a non-profit organization with a 501(c)(3) status, is dedicated to offering scholarships to children whose parents have suffered severe injuries, death, or debilitating illnesses due to work-related incidents. These scholarships are granted annually, and eligible students are encouraged to apply each year.
Criteria for Student Applicants
- Applicants must be 26 years old or younger at the time of application
- Applicants must be dependents of a worker who has been seriously injured, killed, or suffered a debilitating illness in a work-related incident
- Applicants must demonstrate a financial need for post-secondary education funding
- Applicants must be accepted or planning to enroll in a college, university, or technical school [GRADUATE and/or UNDERGRADUATE]
- Applicants must be pursuing a degree as a [FULL-TIME or PART-TIME] student
- Other eligibility criteria may apply
Required Documentation
- A completed Kids’ Chance Scholarship Application, including student, family, and educational institution contact information
- A transcript of the most recent grades (unofficial transcripts are acceptable)
- A copy of the Student Aid Report (SAR) from the FAFSA, including your Student Aid Index (SAI), formerly known as the Expected Family Contribution (EFC), if you are attending a 2-year or 4-year college or university
- A brief statement outlining the applicant’s educational and career objectives
- Proof of a compensable injury/illness claim, such as a determination letter or claim number from the state workers’ compensation board or a death certificate
- Basic employer information for parents
Who is Eligible for the Scholarship?
Eligibility for the scholarship requires that the applicant's parent has suffered a catastrophic injury or death in a Michigan work-related accident that is covered by workers’ compensation. The parent's injury or death must be compensable under Michigan Workers’ Compensation Law, and there must be no dispute regarding the compensability of the parent's injury/death.
Scholarship Criteria
The applicant must meet the standards established by the Executive Committee of KIDS’ CHANCE OF MICHIGAN, LLC. These standards primarily focus on the financial needs of the student. The applicant must be a Michigan resident, aged between 17-22, and must demonstrate financial need due to the parent’s injury/death.
Scholarship Duration
The scholarship is valid for one academic year or term and may be dependent on academic performance. Applicants can reapply at the end of each academic year or term for the subsequent year or term. Renewals are subject to the availability of funds.
Scholarship Coverage
Scholarships range from $3750.00 to $7500.00, based on fund availability and the number of eligible applicants. These scholarships can be used at any accredited college, community college, trade, or vocational school within Michigan. The scholarships are paid directly to the educational institution and may cover tuition and books not covered by other grants and/or scholarships.
Required Documentation for Completed Application
Your application will not be reviewed by the Scholarship Committee until all documents referenced in the scholarship application form have been received.
