Introduction
The Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) works to advance humane treatment for animals in all settings — in laboratories, on farms, in commerce, in homes, and in natural environments. After more than seven decades of advocacy, AWI seeks to extend its impact by supporting the next generation of animal-protection leaders through the Animal Welfare Institute Scholarship Fund. The program aims to back students committed to reducing animal suffering and conserving vulnerable species. Details on the scholarship’s purpose and application process appear below.
Eligibility
- Who may apply: U.S. high school seniors.
- Requirements: Applicants must demonstrate a history of involvement in animal welfare (through volunteer activities and/or advocacy) and plan to pursue a career that will help reduce human-caused animal suffering or protect at-risk species.
- Recommendation: A letter of recommendation is required from someone other than a family member who is familiar with the applicant’s animal-protection work.
- Finalists: If you are named a finalist, you must provide proof of acceptance to a college or university before any scholarship funds are distributed.
Key Dates and Timeline
- The 2026–27 scholarship cycle opens for applications on November 24.
- Scholarship recipients will be announced by May 1, 2026.
- Applications will be available from this page beginning Monday, November 24 and remain open until the posted submission deadline.
Selection Process
An AWI review committee will evaluate submissions and select recipients based on demonstrated commitment to animal welfare and a persuasive, feasible plan to continue work that reduces human-caused suffering of animals. The committee will also verify required recommendation letters.
Award Details
- Every applicant will receive a subscription to AWI Quarterly.
- Up to 12 scholarships will be awarded, each valued at $3,000.*
